Your Guide to Adult Braces

adult braces

Contrary to popular belief, braces are not just for children and adolescents. In today’s world, more adults are opting to get braces. In fact, it is estimated that two out of 10 people who wear braces are adults. Many adults get braces because they have felt self-conscious about their teeth ever since they were a child. Other people get braces because their teeth have shifted as the result of the natural aging process.

At Ragan Orthodontics in Dallas, we specialize in different types of braces and we offer treatment to patients of all ages. It’s never too late to get that million dollar smile. We can help adults get the smile they’ve always dreamed of, as well as kids and teens. If you’re interested in straightening your teeth, contact Ragan Orthodontics today. We’ll work with you to figure out the most effective treatment options.

It is important to note that misaligned teeth are not only a cosmetic concern. They can also lead to dental problems. People who have misaligned teeth may have trouble cleaning them properly. This can put a person at risk for developing gum disease and tooth decay. Untreated dental problems can also lead to headaches and toothaches.

How Effective Are Braces At Correcting Alignment Problems?

Braces are very effective for correcting tooth alignment problems in adults. However, it is important to note that it may take adults a longer time to get results than adolescents or children. Adults typically wear braces for 18 months to three years. They may also have to wear retainers in order to prevent their teeth from shifting again.

Are Braces Right For Me?

The vast majority of adults will be able to benefit from getting braces. However, it is important to note that only an orthodontist can determine whether braces are right for a particular person. If you have any questions about braces, then you will need to consult with your orthodontist.

Different Options Available

There are several options available for adults who want to get braces. Metal braces, which are made out of stainless steel, are the most common option. Patients can also get clear ceramic braces, which blend in with the natural teeth. Lingual braces are another option. They are placed on the back of the teeth. Additionally, people can get clear removable aligners, or Invisalign. People typically wear the aligner for two weeks.

Every option has its pros and cons. Doctor Ragan will discuss the different options with you, so you will be able to make the best decision.

Adjusting To Braces

People who wear braces may face a number of challenges. If you opt for traditional metal braces, then it may be harder for you to speak and eat at first. It is also important for people to take good care of their teeth and gums in order to reduce their risk of tooth decay and gum disease. As time passes, you will adjust to having braces, and we will work with you to ensure you know proper cleaning practices for your teeth, gums and braces along the way.
