What are the Causes of Crooked Teeth?

December 11, 2017 by Ragan Orthodontics

crooked teeth

The majority of children nowadays have crooked teeth, which become apparent after the age of five. You may not have noticed it, but there are few people with naturally straight teeth. You’ll find most people with at least one or two teeth that are misaligned. Some of the causes are preventable while others need interventions to treat the crooked teeth. While we may be quick to blame hereditary factors, genetics is sometimes not the sole contributor of crooked teeth. Here are the most common underlying causes of crooked teeth.

Genetics

Genetics plays a prominent role in your chances of acquiring misaligned teeth or jaws. The same inability to choose the color of our eyes or hair is similar to how our teeth will turn out to be. Therefore, if your parents have crooked teeth, there’s a high probability of inheriting the same.

Bad Habits

Children adopt bad habits that create a ripple effect, which gets noticed after many years. Such practices include thumb sucking for comfort or as a pacifier. Such habits may seem harmless, but affect the growing baby. Other unconscious Myofunctional habits include breathing through the mouth, reverse swallowing and tongue thrusting.

Gum Disease and Injury

Disease or injury of your gums will eventually impact your teeth. Gum disease, for instance, can cause your teeth to be loose and change their alignment. Losing teeth or a shift in your jaw due to injury can slowly shift your teeth to cover the space. Reduce face trauma and avoid injury to your teeth by wearing a sports mouthguard whenever you are playing contact sports.

Losing Baby Teeth Early

Baby teeth act as placeholders for permanent teeth. Apart from helping the child eat, they also ensure that the jaw has enough space that will accommodate adult teeth when they eventually grow in. Losing baby teeth too early due to decay or dental trauma may require a space maintainer.
