Adolescents encounter teeth alignment issues just as often as adults do. They may have bite issues, spacing issues or other conditions that could potentially cause challenges in eating, self-image development and speech.
The difference between adults and adolescents is the fact that an adolescent’s bone structure is more malleable. Correcting issues before they develop into permanent afflictions means that doing so is easier and more effective.
While there are several options for correcting alignment issues, two of the most popular treatments are traditional braces and Invisalign Teen®.
How Do Traditional Braces Work?
Traditional braces utilize bands and metal instruments to reposition the teeth and lower jaw. They can effectively fix most issues without the need to alter or remove teeth.
Pressure can be applied to the teeth in a vertical or horizontal fashion. Anchors keep the braces in place. Bands may be applied to the back teeth to add further stabilization. Other equipment is available to treat orthodontic issues that may exist.
Gradual tightening of braces may be needed to achieve the desired effect. This is normal, as the mouth needs to be corrected over time to ensure proper healing of the bone and connective tissues.
Understanding Invisalign Teen®
Invisalign Teen® works similarly to braces with regards to alignment, though the method does vary significantly.
The major advantage is the fact that these “braces” are clear. They are more comfortable than traditional braces for certain patients. They also tend to reduce the number of self-appearance issues that arise from orthodontic appliances.
What Makes Invisalign Teen® Different from Traditional Braces?
There are two major differences between Invisalign Teen® and traditional braces.
These are:
- Invisalign Teen® are more transparent, both in terms of appearance and functionality. This gives rise to fewer complications that may arise from having braces, which is an important concern in children.
- Traditional braces are more robust and offer a faster course of treatment due to their nature. They can correct teeth spacing issues just like Invisalign Teen® can, but they can also fix other orthodontic issues like jaw alignment.
These key differences make Invisalign Teen® and traditional braces ideal for different types of patients. Adolescents with only alignment issues will tend to favor Invisalign Teen® while more complicated conditions will require the use of traditional braces.
Take Action Before It’s Too Late
