Braces for Kids

There are several dental issues that may be corrected with braces for kids, teens and adults. However, we recommend that children with orthodontic problems get braces as soon as they are developmentally ready and not wait until they are young adults. Many problems can be fixed quicker and with less hassle when they are caught early. Braces for kids correct these problems by putting constant pressure on the teeth to move them into the right position.

Some main reasons why kids need braces are:

• Overcrowded teeth that are crooked and overlapping
• Malocclusion or bad bite when the top and bottom jaws do not fit together properly
• Dental problems from thumb or finger sucking, early loss of baby teeth or an injury that affected the teeth

During a consultation with our orthodontist at Ragan Orthodontics in Dallas, your child’s dental and orthodontic issues may be examined and the best treatment recommended, whether it be traditional braces, clear braces or Invisalign®, depending on the age. There are several types of braces for kids that achieve great results.

Traditional metal braces are much smaller than in the past, but they still have brackets, wires and rubber bands. They are tightened a little at every visit to slowly line up the teeth in the proper position. These braces are the most noticeable of the different types, but they come with colorful rubber bands to help add a little fun to the process.

Once the braces have been applied, your child will need to visit our office in Dallas at regular intervals to have the braces monitored and adjusted. If a bracket or wire breaks, you should have it repaired as soon as possible or it may extend the time of treatment.

In order to catch any orthodontic problems early, it is recommended for kids to visit our office as soon as their baby teeth start falling out. From there, the different types of braces for kids can be discussed for your child’s particular situation.
