Clear Braces vs. Metal: What are the Differences and Similarities?

People experience jaw pain, tooth wear and even a lack of confidence due to crooked and misaligned teeth. The most common solution for this condition is the use of braces, which are designed to straighten the teeth. There are many different types of braces available today, and knowing the most appropriate for you is important. We’ll take a look at clear braces and metal braces to help you be well-informed.

Clear Braces

There are two basic types of clear braces:

  • Ceramic braces
  • Invisalign® aligners

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are similar in almost every aspect to metal braces, but the only difference is that they have clear plastic wires and brackets. The main aim of using plastic brackets instead of metal is to blend the braces with the teeth. Ceramic braces are not as easily visible as metal braces. Ceramic braces can also be preferable to metal braces because they are less likely to cause irritation to those who suffer from mouth sensitivity. However, patients need to regularly clean their ceramic braces to avoid staining them and the teeth.

Invisalign® Aligners

This type of system uses plastic aligners to correct crooked teeth. The aligners come in the form of trays which are designed to align the teeth in bits until the required positioning is achieved. The main difference between Invisalign® and other types of braces is that they are not easily visible. Invisalign® offers a more flexible experience to patients because the aligners can be easily removed as needed.

Metal Braces

These are the most common type of braces and the one that has been in use for the longest amount of time. Metal braces have a basic installation system that involves attaching metal brackets to the teeth.
