4 Tips to Prevent Staining of Ceramic Braces

September 24, 2018 by Tara Castaldi

ceramic braces

If you are not careful, your ceramic braces can stain very easily. This quickly turns a hardly visible orthodontic treatment into an unappealing and yellowish brown mess. The following tips will help you keep your braces looking great and stain-free throughout the treatment.

Refrain From Foods That Stain

Sticky and hard treats can stain and damage your braces. Acidic foods etch your enamel. Foods with rich, thick, and sticky paste such as tomatoes will definitely stain your braces. Their red pigment is highly strong and normally sticks on the braces for a long time. Mustard is another culprit you should avoid at all costs. Its yellow color will leave your braces with an unattractive dark shade. Simply put, avoid all foods that are rich in color.

If it is necessary you consume such foods, do so in moderation. Some of the foods and liquids to keep away from as much as possible are:

• Red wine
• Blueberries, blackberries, beets and curries
• Tea and coffee
• Dark sodas
• Candy
• Sauce

Refrain From Smoking

Smoking is notorious for staining not only your teeth but braces as well. Nicotine will leave your beautiful, invisible braces looking yellow or brown. This obviously removes the aesthetic appeal of your ceramic braces.

Floss Frequently

Flossing is an effective habit in preventing any potential stains from ruining the great look of your ceramic braces. Food particles can easily lodge between your teeth. Daily flossing ensures your mouth and teeth remain unstained and healthy as you undergo orthodontic treatment.

Avoid Whitening Toothpastes

Most individuals make the mistake of using white toothpastes in an effort to prevent the staining of their braces. White toothpastes do the complete opposite.

The above tips are effective at ensuring your ceramic braces look good during your treatment. Make an appointment at Ragan Orthodontics in Dallas for more information and helpful tips. Contact us today to book an appointment!
